Could be Sale's personal catcher
Tromp got the start Sunday with Chris Sale on the mound for Atlanta, and he could wind up being the veteran southpaw's personal catcher while he's in the majors, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Sale was very complimentary of Tromp's work behind the plate after the game, in which he struck out seven batters and walked two over 5.1 innings. If Atlanta wants to keep 35-year-old Travis d'Arnaud from breaking down while Sean Murphy (oblique) is on the shelf, Tromp will likely start more than once even five days or so, but having a pitcher like Sale talk up his game-calling skills can only help his outlook for playing time. Whether he offers anything as a hitter is another question, though -- the 29-year-old backstop went 0-for-2 on Sunday, and he slashed .210/.336/.384 with 10 homers over 65 games for Triple-A Gwinnett in 2023.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
On borrowed time
Sean Murphy is almost fully recovered from his oblique strain and should soon begin a rehab assignment, Mark Bowman of MLB.comreports, and Tromp's run as Atlanta's backup catcher should end soon after.
ANALYSIS
Tromp began the campaign at Triple-A Gwinnett but was quickly added to the 40-man roster after Murphy went down with the injury Opening Day. The 29-year-old Tromp seemed set to operate as Chris Sale's personal catcher early on but has instead worked as more of a true backup to Travis d'Arnaud.

2021 Fantasy Outlook
Tromp has spent most of his career to date in the Reds organization, but became a minor-league free agent after the 2019 season and landed a minor-league contract with San Francisco in January of 2020. He ended up joining the Giants a few days into the season and stuck around despite appearing overmatched at the plate, walking once and striking out 20 times in 64 PA. The Giants non-tendered him in December and then brought him back a week later, but with Buster Posey, Curt Casali and Joey Bart ahead of him on the depth chart, Tromp faces an uphill battle. Clearly, his reacquisition was about adding organizational depth. If those three names in front of him all get injured or must be quarantined, Tromp might have a short run of utility in two-catcher leagues, but do not expect sustained success.
