2024 Fantasy Outlook
Schultz forwent the opportunity to become the top free-agent tight end on the market for a second consecutive offseason, instead re-signing with the Texans on a three-year, $36 million contract in March. His first year in Houston was similar statistically to Schultz’s last three campaigns in Dallas; the 6-foot-5, 244-pound tight end caught 59 of 88 targets for 635 yards and five touchdowns in 15 appearances for the Texans after averaging 66 catches for 667 yards and 5.7 TDs over the previous three years. C.J. Stroud led all qualified quarterbacks in passing yards per game as a rookie, and while Schultz finished second on the team in targets, Stroud’s preference for pushing the ball downfield elevated the Texans’ wide receivers more than it did the team’s tight ends. Nonetheless, Schultz has an established track record of success and an elite quarterback throwing him the ball, which is a recipe for respectable fantasy production. Only five of Schultz’s targets in 2023 came inside the opponent’s 10-yard line, so the key to taking his game to the next level will be earning a larger share of looks from Stroud when the Texans get in scoring range. Signs three-year extension
The Texans and Schultz agreed to terms Tuesday on a three-year, $36 million contract extension, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Schultz will stick around with C.J. Stroud for the foreseeable future on a new deal that includes $23.5 million in guarantees, per Rapoport. Had he not been re-signed Schultz would've arguably been the top tight end of this free agency cycle, and keeping the pass-catching corps that Stroud found success with as a rookie intact makes complete sense for Houston. Across 15 regular-season games in 2023, Schultz secured 59 of 88 targets for 635 yards and five scores.

Mutual interest in return to Texans
Schultz and the Texans have mutual interest in a contract extension, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston.
ANALYSIS
Schultz spent the 2023 season with the Texans on a one-year, $9 million contract. He's viewed as the top tight end available in free agency, so it may take a multi-year deal to bring the 27-year-old tight end back to Houston. After showing a nice rapport with rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud en route to 635 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 2023, Schultz is interested in staying with Houston, while the Texans value the continuity bringing back Schultz would offer Stroud.

Schultz signed a one-year contract with the Texans in free agency after spending his first five NFL seasons in Dallas. After barely seeing the field his first two years, Schultz carved out a substantial role over three subsequent campaigns, drawing at least 89 targets each season while totaling exactly 2,000 yards and 17 touchdowns over that three-year span. He’ll face a downgrade at quarterback, at least short term, with the Texans either starting Davis Mills or second overall pick C.J. Stroud. Cowboys QB Dak Prescott threw 37 TDs in 2021 alone, helping Schultz set career highs with 808 yards and eight touchdowns that year. At no point was Schultz the focal point of the Dallas passing attack, and Houston’s lack of established pass catchers could lead to more targets (but also more defensive attention) for the 6-foot-5 tight end.
